Founded in Brazil in 2017 by a team of entrepreneurs and beverage experts, Fabenne set out on a mission to make wine accessible. The founders of Fabenne noticed that while wine production was growing in Brazil, consumption wasn’t. Wine was too expensive, meaning most Brazilians only drank it on special occasions. Fabenne set out to fix the problem of accessibility by launching a bag-in-box format in 2019.
Wine is traditionally packaged in 750 mL glass bottles, which presents a problem for a company looking to make their wine widely accessible. Glass bottles are heavy and costly to ship, wine begins to oxidize when it’s opened, and the environmental impact of glass is substantial. A New York Times article states, “switching to Bag-in-Box (BIB) wine for 97% of the wines produced to be consumed in one year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about two million tons, or the equivalent of retiring 400,000 cars.
As Brazil continued emerging as a leading wine producer in South America, Fabenne wanted to eliminate the issues packaging wine in a bottle brings for two reasons: one, the environmental impact of glass bottles was clear, but secondly, glass bottles were getting in the way of making wine accessible. They currently utilize our bag-in-box for both retail and institutional settings, with the goal of providing sustainably packaged wine to consumers and to restaurants and bars. Now consumers can buy wine at an affordable rate with the knowledge that their wine will taste delicious from the first sip to the last drop—there’s no need to worry that the wine you’re buying might go bad after a day or two. Along with increased quality assurances, our packaging streamlined operations for Fabenne which offered cost savings due to simplified inventory needs.
Sustainability and accessibility go hand in hand. Fabenne broke down barriers to wine consumption by looking at how wine is packaged, and ultimately made a decision that is both economical and better for the planet. Our flexible packaging solutions:
